The Sukhothai Kingdom existed from 1238 until 1438. The old capital, now 12 kilometers outside of new Sukhothai in Tambon Mueang Kao, is in ruins and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage historical park. One of the best ways to experience this area of the ancient city and its people is by bicycle. Enter Cycling Sukhothai – a friendly ecologically minded tour company with real local knowledge and a true passion for cycling.
Cycling Sukhothai is a small, family run company. Ronny, a Belgian with a self-professed ‘cycling is in my blood’ condition, handles the maintenance of bicycles and tour logistics while his Thai wife Mem guides the memorable tours, revealing the culture and lifestyle distinct to Sukhothai.
Cycling Sukhothai began more than six years ago when Ronny and Mem were managing the Ban Thai Guesthouse in Sukhothai where guests were often asking if the guesthouse had rental bicycles available for exploring the city’s ancient ruins and surrounding areas. Ronny and Mem set out to provide their guests not just a bike for rent, but also a guided bicycle tour, showing them the beauty of the Sukhothai countryside and local Thai life.
In their own time away from the guesthouse Ronny and Mem were cycling almost every evening, wandering along dirt roads, canals, and through small farming villages, all of the while hearing many interesting stories about the area and talking with local farmers to learn how they live. It was these evening explorations that eventually grew into the network of local tours offered by Cycling Sukhothai.
Ronny founded Cycling Sukhothai on a philosophy of ecologically friendly and non-intrusive travel by bicycle, simplicity, and cycling fun.
