Last month, I wrote an article after interviewing former French National Mountain Bike Champion Peter Pouly. The article focused on Peter’s professional cycling career, 2005 retirement, and his subsequent move to Thailand where he recently opened a training camp in the north of the country. During that interview I learned that Peter had also taken the initiative to open a shop in Chiang Rai, his adopted home in Thailand, in order to promote his training camp and cycling tours that would also serve the needs of local and visiting cyclists.
The shop, known as Cyclist Point, opened at the end of October 2013 and offers a comfortable meeting spot and refueling station for local weekly rides. Small meals, delicious smoothies, and of course several Coffee and Tea choices make up the bulk of the menu items available at the shop. Morgan, who manages the shop, mentioned that the Special Menu items change periodically and the shop will soon begin to offer more cyclist treats like waffles and pasta dishes.
The decor of the shop is dominated by wood and warm colors, paying homage to Chiang Rai’s northern Thailand old-world quaintness. The cycling memorabilia throughout the shop pays homage to the owner, Peter Pouly; the photos, jerseys, and other cycling kit from past and present experiences make Cyclist Point a unique place to grab a coffee before or after your next ride in Chiang Rai.
Entry to mid-level road bike rentals are available from Cyclist Point and inquiries about training, trips, and local rides from the shop are always welcome.
