Actually, that article about bicycle touring in Korea was written (and ridden) by the creator of the Bicycle Thailand website, John Graham.

I believe he did the whole ride on a hybrid style bicycle with 700x38c tires.
Something in his first article mentions seeing cyclists riding in Korea on road bikes and mountain bikes. Seems to come down to personal preference really.
